ABOUT SAM TURNER;

"I’ve been sketching under the name Hoe Cakes along with my friend Robyn for going on two years now. We mainly produce flyers for our ‘club’ night, but more recently we’ve started taking on outside commissions; artwork for singles, designs for other promoters, fanzine work and company brochures, things like that.

In terms of influence I have a real hard on for illustrators like George Melly and Aubrey Beardsley, it’s just work that flows with forethought and character. I don’t go in for ‘grown up’ art too much to be honest. My dad’s worked in publishing for 25 years and I find that for the most part people in his industry (gallery owners, agents, artists) believe in the sanctity of the work that they produce and/or sell, whereas I know that what we do is completely throwaway - regardless of how good they look, half the flyers we hand out will end up thrown on the floor – and I truly revel in that. If anything it gives me a bit more freedom to do what I like with a design, and as long as Robyn’s happy then I am too.
